My local mechanic said I needed to take it to a transmission shop to get the case seal replaced to stop the leak. Replace the filler plug and crank the vehicles engine. The rest of the van is fine the engine runs great and I've had little trouble with it except for some rather annoying electrical issues (starter, power mirror switch, power door lock, electric window regulator, and blower motor resistor). Place a long throated funnel in the filler hole and pour in 3 US quarts (3,000 ml) of ATF-Z1 or ATF DW-1 fluid. It's been leaking for at least 2 months now and the level still hasn't gotten below the lower dot on the dipstick. The fluid was replaced right after we bought the van with Valvoline MaxLife ATF and it has been replaced roughly every 20K miles since with MaxLife. No transmission problems to this point other than the leak it runs and shifts smoothly as it has since the day we got it. I got the van about 5 years ago with 54K miles, so have put over 70K on it since then.

Why does Honda insist on such an odd design for their automatic transmissions? Most use planetary gear sets and brake bands, but Honda continues to insist on building it like a manual transmission converted to an automatic, with 3 shafts and clutch paks standing in for gears sliding along the shaft for engagement.I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey, almost 125K miles, with a transmission leak from the case seal at the joint where the two transmission halves are joined. As the clutch friction material abraded, it scattered bits inside the transmission case, clogging fluid lines and causing erratic shifting. The five-speed models typically were damaged by premature wear of the third-gear clutch pack. The issue with the Honda trannies appears to be: Should I change that now? It's supposedly a lifetime filter, but many joes are changing it. I did change the ATF at 36K miles, which was 8K ago.Ĥ. Should I consider a different fluid than Honda's ATF named Z1? I want to use something that's proven to be OK.
What do I need to do to get this tranny to last? Change fluids often? Use a diffferent fluid? Use a UOA? Put on a tranny cooler?ģ. I figured this was the best place to help me figure out what to do/not to do. I figured if I took care of this one, I'd be better off. Why? In some cases the rebuilt trannies fail within 15-25K. He gave me the option of getting a rebuilt tranny, which I didn't take. The dealer says he suspects that it's a bearing. I'm getting a very quiet whine out of my transmission, but it's been there with no increase for the last 20K miles. There have been a lot of Honda tranny failures in the Odyssey.
